It is also associated with itching which sometimes last many days. Some PEOPLE EVEN BECOME ILL after being bitten by mosquitoes. Many germs are carried from animals to man by these annoying and dangerous pests. These include the germs which carry:
♦ Encephalitis – This disease is of medical importance in the State of Florida. Encephalitis is fatal and usually occur in children and the elderly. There were incidences of it in Tampa Bay during 1961 and 1962. 25 cases were detected in 1961, 7 of which resulted in death and 222 incidences in 1962 with 222 fatalities.
♦ Dengue Fever– Dengue [DEN-ghee] is a flu-like viral disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. Dengue hemorrhagic fever is a severe, often fatal, complication of dengue. There is no specific treatment for dengue.
♦ Elephantiasis – Lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis, is a neglected tropical disease. Infection occurs when filarial parasites are transmitted to humans through mosquitoes. When a mosquito with infective stage larvae bites a person, the parasites are deposited on the person’s skin from where they enter the body. The larvae then migrate to the lymphatic vessels where they develop into adult worms forming ‘nests’ in the human lymphatic system.
♦ Yellow Fever – Yellow fever is caused by a small virus that is spread by the bite of mosquitoes. This disease is common in South America and in sub-Saharan Africa. Anyone can get yellow fever, but the elderly have a higher risk of severe infection. If a person is bitten by an infected mosquito, symptoms usually develop 3 – 6 days later.
♦ Malaria – Malaria is caused by a parasite that is passed from one human to another by the bite of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. After infection, the parasites (called sporozoites) travel through the bloodstream to the liver, where they mature and release another form, the merozoites. The parasites enter the bloodstream and infect red blood cells. The parasites multiply inside the red blood cells, which then break open within 48 to 72 hours, infecting more red blood cells. The first symptoms usually occur 10 days to 4 weeks after infection, though they can appear as early as 8 days or as long as a year after infection. The symptoms occur in cycles of 48 to 72 hours.
Dogs, mankind’s best friends and precious pets can be severely affected by mosquitoes that also carry:
♦ Canine heartworm – The highest infection rates (up to 45%) in dogs (not maintained on heartworm preventive) are observed within 150 miles of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from the Gulf of Mexico to New Jersey and along the Mississippi River and its major tributaries. Other areas of the United States may have lower incidence rates (5% or less) of canine heartworm disease, while some regions have environmental, mosquito population and dog population factors that allow a higher local incidence of heartworm infection.
